The guide

How to choose a tent in Pakistan

Where you are going matters more than any single feature. Start with the shape, then the fly, then the size.

Dome, tunnel or frame: three shapes, three jobs

Dome tents use crossing poles that share the load. They pitch quickly, shed wind well and suit most family trips and treks. In our range: Nanga Parbat, Trango, Rakaposhi and K-2.

Tunnel tents use parallel hoops, which gives more standing room and space for gear. They are ideal for groups and longer stays, as long as they are pegged and guyed out properly. In our range: Himalaya and Kalam.

Frame tents stand on a rigid metal frame with near-vertical walls. They are built for mess halls, kitchens, command posts, clinics and resorts. In our range: Namal, Kashmir, Neelam and the modernized military series.

Single fly or double fly?

A double-fly tent has a breathable inner tent under a separate waterproof outer. It stays drier inside, handles rain better and holds warmth on cold nights. A single-fly tent is lighter and more affordable, and works well in dry weather and for short stays. Our flood relief tents come in both versions.

How many people?

A tent's rating is the number of people lying side by side with little room to spare. For comfort, or if you carry bags inside, choose one size up: a 4-person tent for a family of three, a 3-person tent for two trekkers with rucksacks.

Pitching and care

  • Pitch on high, level ground, away from dry stream beds and under no dead branches.
  • Tension the fly so it does not touch the inner tent. That is what keeps rain out.
  • Never cook or run a heater inside a tent.
  • Dry the tent completely before packing it away, even after a single night.

Tent questions

Answers to what campers ask us most.

Will my tent keep out the rain?

Our camping and mountaineering tents come with a rain fly. Pitch on high ground, tension the fly so it does not touch the inner tent, and close the vents and doors in heavy rain.

Which tent is best for a family of four?

A 4 to 6-person camping tent such as the Kalam or Himalaya gives room to sleep and to keep bags inside. Size up if you have young children or lots of luggage.

Can I use a camping tent in snow?

For winter and high altitude, choose a mountaineering tent, pitch it in a sheltered spot, and pair it with a warm sleeping bag and an insulated mat.

Do you make tents to order?

Yes. Frame tents, canopies and many tents can be made in custom sizes, fabrics and colours. Request a quote.
